Overall speed lower than letter speed adds extra space between letters and words (Farnsworth spacing). It is the easiest way to learn: letters sound right, and you get time to think.

How do you translate Morse code?

Type English to get Morse code, or paste dots and dashes to get English. The translator detects the direction by itself. Separate letters with a space and words with a slash (/).

  1. Type or paste into the left box. Text turns into Morse code. Dots and dashes turn into text.
  2. Press Play to hear the beeps. The signal tape lights up each letter as it plays, so you can follow along.
  3. Press Light for a full-screen flashing light you can use to signal someone. Repeat loops the message.
  4. Use Download to save the sound as MP3 or WAV, or the text as a file. Share link copies a link to your message.
  5. Open Sound settings for speed presets, the tone, the volume and four sound types, including an old telegraph sounder.

How is Morse code written?

Every letter is a short pattern of dots (·) and dashes (−). When you write Morse code as text:

In sound, timing does the same job. A dash is three times as long as a dot. The silence inside a letter is one dot long, between letters it is three dots, and between words it is seven dots.

The translator is also a Morse code generator. Type any text, then play it, flash it, or press Download to save it as an MP3 or WAV file. Use it for videos, games, escape rooms, school projects or practice audio for your phone.

One unit in milliseconds is 1200 divided by the WPM. With Farnsworth spacing, the dots and dashes stay at full speed and only the gaps between letters and words get longer.

Questions people ask

How do I translate Morse code to English?
Paste the Morse code into the box. The translator sees that it only has dots, dashes and spaces and switches to Morse to English by itself. Put one space between letters and a slash (/) between words.
How do I write a space between words in Morse code?
In written Morse, people use a slash (/) or a wider gap between words. In sound, a word gap is 7 dot-lengths of silence, a letter gap is 3, and the gap inside a letter is 1.
Can I download the Morse code sound?
Yes. Press Download and choose MP3 or WAV. The file uses the speed, tone and sound type set under Sound settings.
What speed should I use?
Around 15 to 20 words per minute (WPM) sounds natural. Learners often hear letters at 18 to 20 WPM with extra space between them (Farnsworth spacing), which is what the Learner preset does.
What does WPM mean in Morse code?
Words per minute. It is measured with the word "PARIS", which is exactly 50 dot-lengths long including the space after it. At 20 WPM one dot lasts 60 milliseconds.
Which characters can be translated?
Letters A to Z, numbers 0 to 9 and common punctuation such as . , ? / ( ) : = + - " @ and '. Accented letters like é or ñ are sent as their plain letter. Characters with no Morse code are left out, and the translator tells you which ones.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The translator runs fully in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server.
What does # mean in the result?
A # marks a group of dots and dashes that is not a real Morse character. Check the spacing: a missing space joins two letters into one long code.
